Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Francesco Cavina, 71, Bishop Emeritus of Carpi, as the new Apostolic Visitor to Medjugorje. He replaces Archbishop Aldo Cavalli, 80. The Vatican is not ending its special oversight of Medjugorje, but continuing it under new leadership. Bishop Cavina's position on the alleged apparitions of Medjugorje is unknown. He worked at the Vatican Secretariat of State from 1996 to 2011. Then, Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Carpi. Monsignor Cavina resigned on 26 June 2019, at the age of 64. He said he had been the target of a long media campaign. The controversy involved accusations of political favoritism and the possible use of public money for a religious celebration. The investigation against Cavina was closed because the accusations were found to be without evidence.

The work, begun in 1957, by the late Father Maurice Raffalli, has been without a priestly member since Father's death in 2020 at the age of 87. Having assisted at the first vows of the Congregation in the 1990s, the Coronation of the Image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and its later enthronement in the beautiful sanctuary built by Fr Raffalli, it has been a very great joy for us to spend this week here with our friends of so many years. The organizers of the annual Summorum Pontificum pilgrimage have denied reports that they were barred from using Rome’s Augustinianum conference center in 2027. The October 30 statement contradicts an earlier account by Luigi Casalini of MessaInLatino.it. In a communiqué, Christian Marquant, president of the International Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage Organizing Committee (CISP), stated: “The CISP did not ask the Augustinianum to hold its PAX LITURGICA 2027 session in its Auditorium.
